You may think you’re saving money, but maybe you’re not. Find out how making investments in furnishings will save you money!

Think about it, you purchase a $400 chair from Wayfair for your living room to save money since you have children, or a pet…this may seem like a great idea, but this could end up being way more costly than you think.

Oftentimes we hear clients tell us that they will purchase a cheap piece of furniture to get them through until their children grow up. The reality is, you’ll end up needing a new chair a lot sooner than you think.

The upholsteries used on “more affordable” chairs are typically lacking in quality. Not only will the batting and springs go out on you, leaving you with a sinking chair, but the fabric will soon be more of a mess than anything else.
With big box stores like Wayfair, Overstock, and Target, the selection of fabrics is minimal which leaves you with few options to choose from. When you only have a few color and pattern options, you’ll end up spending more of your time looking for the right piece–and time is money!

Not only do you have few options to pick from, but you’re also missing out on stain-resistant options as well.

All you need is one sippy-cup mishap or an abandoned lollipop to ruin the entire chair. The fabrics that furniture stores have available now are really quite amazing. You can spill an entire glass of wine on your chair and it will bead up and wipe away!
Also, keep in mind that a poorly made chair isn’t going to hold up well with kids sitting and hanging on its arms either.

Instead of thinking, “I will buy this cheap sofa just to get us through until the kids grow up, why not invest in the enjoyment of a gorgeous, stain-resistant upholstered sofa that will stand the test of time AND look great in your space?!

If you check out Consumer Affairs reviews of Value City, their poor ratings repeatedly talk about the customers’ utmost disappointment in the quality of their discounted furnishings.
One person says, “All I can say is, do NOT buy the bonded leather sofa, I paid $1000 and now have multiple tears on the cushion of the seating.” It’s surprising to see how many customers’ expect quality when purchasing from these stores.

A good rule of thumb is that the cost is cheap, it’s most likely relevant to the quality of the product you’re purchasing.

A quality leather sofa should run you anywhere from $2,000-$6,000+. If you’re only planning on staying in a home for a couple of years and think that making an investment in quality furniture isn’t a good idea then, by all means, Value City is a great place to make a quick and easy purchase, just remember—you get what you’re paying for and you’re going to end up spending more money to replace that piece in a couple of years.

And this brings us to the next point:
In a world where we are quickly killing our planet, shouldn’t we think more about the quality of what we are buying so that we aren’t being wasteful by throwing away furnishings in a year due to a broken leg, sagging upholstery, or harmful chemical off-gassing?

We need to start putting more effort and thought into our purchases. As a society, we have become so accustomed to buying cheap items with knowledge that we will “just buy a new one” when it breaks. This wasteful way of thinking not only is causing harm to our home-the Earth, but it is adding to the epidemic which our society silently faces… overconsumption disorders.

We must break the norm of purchasing whatever we want, there’s no way our planet can keep up with this trend.

To conclude, when possible, we should think of buying furnishings and decor as an investment instead of something to just “get you by.” By doing so, you will ultimately save money in the long run, you will be living a healthier lifestyle by avoiding possible toxic off-gassing from cheap unregulated products, and you will be helping the environment by being less wasteful.

Let’s all put more effort into our purchases, not only will it help our Earth, it will be something that will help your wallet as well!
